About Kandy & the Hill Country

Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, is located 115 km from Colombo and is 465 metres above sea level. It is the capital of the Central Province and the cultural capital of Sri Lanka and most of the ancient temples and other sites of interest are within easy reach of the city on day trips.

When travelling from Colombo you pass the spice gardens, Pinnawela elephant orphanage, Mahaweli river and the famous Peradeniya Gardens - Lord Mountbatten's WWII headquarters - and arrive in Kandy, home to the Royal Palace and the sacred Temple of the Tooth (known as the Dalada Maligawa) which houses the sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha.

Each August, in a 10-day series of evening ceremonies, the Temple of the Tooth and four other major temples parade important relics around the town. The parade, known as the Perahera, grows bigger each night, culminating in a massive daylight parade on the last day. Whip-crackers, fire-jugglers, stilt-walkers, drummers, dancers, and brightly clothed elephants roam the streets of Kandy in front of thousands of excited onlookers.
